Apr. 07, 2003 - 5:07 p.m. Let's talk about vampires, not the mythological fantasy creatures, but individuals who steal a bit of life from time to time....real vampires. They walk amongst you. They are excellent chameleons and blend in very well with their environment. They can be either very still, an empty space in the fabric of the universe or they can be this amazingly bright beacon, a whirlwind of energy, drawing everyone and everything into them. They have an understanding that transcends common sense or simple wisdom. They intrinsically feel the rhythm of those around them. They generally have an insight into the nature of things that somehow seems to be missing from the general public. They drink blood or sometimes go straight to the root and slurp from the source, the energy that is very palpable to these creatures. They view humanity through a different filter, recognizing the heirarchy of the food chain, yet adoring every little nuance of their intended prey. Vampires love humans. They are the richest of feasts, but it is not the taste and texture of their physical organs and components, but rather the force that animates their every gesture, the soul that sparks those adoring little differences and spice the feast, the innocence and light that is generated by their unique perspective (a perspective that is alien to the vampire). Vampires are sensual creatures. They have a broader range of sensory perception manifested in different ways, but they are attracted to one or more senses in particular and utilize that particular sense(s) to gorge on the feast that is available to them from it. If they are tactically inclined, they will be unable to restrain themselves from touching and exploring through their skin the myriad of sensations through that organ. If their sense of smell is their primary exploratory method, then you may find yourself being snorted constantly in the presense of a vampire, as if you were a line of cocaine just lying there waiting to be devoured. A vampire focused on his taste buds will have you writhing under his tongue, and one that is audibly stimulated will be attracted to the sounds of a lyrical voice, an unusual laugh, the pounding of waves upon a shore, the range and beauty of music. A vampire with enhanced vision will be the most shameless of voyueurs. It, however, goes far beyond that. They will know and understand through these enhanced senses things that are unfathomable to the general populace. Be it visions that invade their mind, recognition of each other through scent, the sound of truth or falsehood ringing in their ears, tactile empathy, or a myriad of other gifts, these extra-sensory or heightened sensory perceptions are necessary for the vampire to function as it was created. Vampires are the energy carrion eaters of the universe. They lap at the fractured excess of nature, and are intrinsic to the continual working of the system. Any and all abilities that vampires may have are an extension of this basic principle which governs and drives them. The allure of the vampire is merely a predatory response that makes their hunting ritual more effective. The darker aspects of their personality are a result of serving in this capacity. The mystique and the basis of the myth is a response to the unfathomable alieness that they represent. The majority of life encased in the human form is driven by a creative instinct, but these creatures are anathema to that motivating factor. Instead their motivations arise from the opposite end of the pendulum, and through this destructive tendency, they restore balance to nature and this world. Vampires do not have an inability to be like humans. It is rather that they are unfulfilled unless they pursue the true calling of their nature. And it is when a vampire embraces his true nature, do they separate themselves from the rest of humanity.
